Such a peaceful gem in the middle of downtown Phoenix! We had four hours to spare before our flight, so we grabbed a Waymo and turned our wait into an impromptu tour of the city’s artwork and this beautiful garden. Visiting in February was perfect—the weather was lovely, and it was such a relief to experience the space without the usual summer heat. The Japanese Friendship Garden, or Rohoen, is truly an authentic 3.5-acre stroll garden. It’s incredibly well-maintained, featuring over 1,500 tons of hand-picked rock, elegant stone footbridges, and traditional lanterns. Walking the path felt like stepping into another world, complete with flowing streams, a stunning 14-foot waterfall, and a pond filled with over 300 colorful koi fish. Whether you are looking for a serene spot to relax or a beautiful backdrop for photography, it is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. Highlights of our visit included: * The Tranquil Atmosphere: The sound of the waterfall and the peaceful koi pond made for a perfect escape from the city bustle. * Authentic Design: The attention to detail in the garden, from the 85+ varieties of plants to the beautiful architecture of the tea house. * Convenient Location: It was the perfect, accessible stop for us to enjoy while exploring downtown Phoenix. * Comfortable Conditions: The February weather made the stroll even more enjoyable and refreshing.

Great park I loved it, although I thought it was bigger. In reality it is not that big. They have different activities listed on website, if I lived here permanently, I would love to go there. They have shop with different beautiful japanese items and snacks. It would be great for taking photos and tickets are not expensive! I will come again to take some photos 🙂 I think it is best to come here any other season then summer 😂

I visited the Japanese Friendship Garden in Phoenix a few years ago, and it was a wonderful experience. The garden is beautifully maintained and offers a peaceful escape from the busy city. It was not crowded during my visit, which made it even more relaxing. The koi fish were one of my favorite parts, and I enjoyed watching them swim through the ponds. Every corner of the garden felt calm and thoughtfully designed. It is the perfect place to slow down, take a walk, and enjoy nature. I appreciated how quiet and serene the atmosphere was. There is also a nice gift shop where you can pick up a souvenir before leaving. The garden is a hidden gem that is well worth a visit if you’re in Phoenix. I would happily return the next time I’m in the area.

Tranquil and beautiful with adorable merchandise available. I've been here twice now and would happily go a third time. Obviously, I went with my best friend. It seems mandatory, given the name. It's not large and can easily be walked through in under twenty minutes, but the size isn't the point. It's the atmosphere and aesthetics. Everything is a vibrant green, and small statues and other fixtures can be spotted poking out of the bushes. There are waterfalls leading into the ponds that are filled with colorful koi, and benches are placed for anyone wanting to sit and appreciate the scene. Snacks, drinks, and small items are ready for purchase, and this is where I learned that I cannot stand red bean paste. I'm afraid mochi isn't for me. I shared dango with my friend, and we both got ramen as well. I bought a plushie of a koi as a keepsake, and I still have it. A very memorable and sweet experience I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a casual outing.

This is a beautiful garden and definitely worth visiting. I happened to go on an extremely hot day when the temperature reached 113°F, so I wasn't able to enjoy it as much as I would have liked. Fortunately, the garden isn't very large, so I was able to walk through it fairly quickly. There were also several shaded areas where I could escape the intense sun. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. There's plenty of parking, as well as a charming gift shop that sells Japanese items and cold beverages, which were especially appreciated in the heat. I highly recommend visiting this beautiful garden, but if possible, avoid going during an extreme heat wave. It was so hot that even my cell phone overheated!

The details of this garden are thoroughly Japanese, not mixed Asian influence like other gardens. Lovely. Peaceful. Lots of shade and benches throughout for enjoying the views. Went early to beat the summer heat and was surprised with a bonus summer ticket to be used before the end of August. The climate-controlled gift shop has a number of Japanese items and pre-packaged snacks available.

Very nice garden overall located in downtown Phoenix. The garden is a loop path, centered around a pond, with a bridge crossing the pond. It takes approximately one hour to walk around at a leisurely pace. My issue with the garden is that it is smaller than other Japanese gardens I have visited and relatively pricey for the size compared to other botanical gardens. It is well maintained but lacks in size and scope. It is very minimalistic with some Japanese art and architecture. By contrast, the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix is approximately the same price, is significantly larger, and takes several hours to walk through. Similarly, compared to something like the Portland Japanese Garden, this has the feel of a very nice downtown city park and probably should be free or at least half the cost to visit.
