Extremely disappointed with my experience! Waited 1 hour 45 minutes for a car, only to be told it wasn't ready yet. Overbooking seems to be the issue. Staff and management were inefficient, spending more time on phones than helping customers. Meanwhile, people were forced to pay extra for alternatives. Poor customer service and lack of accountability. Would not recommend.
I recently rented a car from Avis on March 8th, and the experience was frustrating from start to finish. My assigned vehicle was in spot P11, but the car there did not match what I had selected. What should have been a simple fix turned into an hour-long ordeal due to an enormous lineup at the Preferred Customer kiosk. The inefficiency and lack of streamlined service were disappointing. In contrast, National Car Rental offers a seamless experience—just walk down the aisle, pick a car, and drive off without hassle. Given this experience, I won’t be using Avis again for my rental needs.
As a long time Avis preferred member, I love that I can check in from my phone, grab my car, and go. In Phoenix if I have to deal with the desk that’s about where the love usually ends. This trip we were given a Mazda suv that was fine until about 7 mins after we left the lot and hit the freeway. As soon as we accelerated above 45 mph the check engine light went on and we received warnings about every collision avoidance radar malfunctioning. On the freeway, with my wife and 2 young children in the vehicle, the suv then went into some kind of "limp mode" and wouldn’t accelerate above 35mph. We were 3 miles from the next off ramp. We were repeatedly almost hit by semi trucks, honked at, flipped off, all while my kids cried as they were afraid we’d be in an accident. Finally off the freeway we slowly limped the vehicle back to the lot. The response from the Avis desk in the garage was almost worse than the freeway scenario. Absolutely ZERO empathy. Not one single "sorry" or any attempt to understand the situation. Literally, LITERALLY, the only response I received was "Mazda’s don’t usually do that". I have never experienced employees who cared less about what they do. I was given a new car and they looked over my shoulder to the next in line and said "next, please". That car did work for our trip, which is probably the only reason I’d book with Avis again. But I’m not sure I’ll be doing so in Phoenix which is my most common destination.
I was able to reserve a car in 30 minutes due to my other rental not having a car available. There was a line when I got to the counter , 3-4 people working. The wait time was about 20-25 minutes. When i got my turn , I was told that I got a Mystery vehicle. This is the craziest. They told me I get an electric truck. Never in my life I drove an electric nor a truck. Of course I showed concern. The guy there said he's trying to find me a gas car. After about 10 minutes wait , I got an SUV Mitsubishi. The car was wonderful although I was a little stressed at first since it was both hybrid and electric. I used the gas option which was great ! Of course I got my card charged more for not picking up that mystery car. That's my only complaint. They shouldn't even have that promotion. The price was the cheapest , so I went with that for that reason. Be careful what you get.
Second poor experience with AVIS. Third location. Three vehicles. It's obviously a company problem. Vehicles damaged (literal body damage on two, and holes in interior), dirty (not washed, oil in bed of truck), in poor mechanical condition (shaking steering wheel, AC not working, etc). The employees have told me they don't see the vehicles before re-renting - they use a 3rd party company so we have to let them know before leaving if there's damage or problems. That is ridiculous. Definitely last time using Avis. (pics attached were a few I took, never took possession of one of the vehicles)
Hasle free experience of returning a car , its just took me a minute to get everything done. Not tried any other rental services except Avis but for me its the most comfortable rental i had even rented.
When we went to the counter, there were 3 helping customers. They were talking so much time. We have 7 people in front of us but it took like 45 mins. One customer was talking for ever. When our chance came up, we were out in less than 10 mins to our car. Got a nice car 2025 Elantra. Loved the car. Will choose avis again
