✈️ Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport (PHX) Review

I recently flew into Phoenix Sky Harbor and while it’s one of the larger airports in the U.S., my experience felt surprisingly smooth — closer to a smaller airport in terms of efficiency.

Not the Busiest

Even though PHX handles a ton of flights daily, it doesn’t have that chaotic, shoulder-to-shoulder feel you sometimes get at other major airports. Security lines moved quickly, and I didn’t feel overwhelmed by crowds.

Navigation – A Bit Tricky

This is where PHX shows its size. The signage could be better, and it takes a bit of focus to figure out which direction to head, especially in Terminal 3. If you’re new here, you might find yourself second-guessing a turn or two.

Clean & Well Kept

One of the first things I noticed: the airport is clean. From the concourses to the restrooms, everything felt well maintained and tidy — which isn’t always the case at big hubs.

Terminal 3 Arrival – Long Walk

I landed at Terminal 3, and while modern, it does have a long walk to the baggage claim. It’s not terrible, but after a long flight, dragging carry-ons that extra distance feels longer than expected.

✅ Overall

PHX combines the efficiency of a smaller airport with the amenities of a bigger hub. Just be ready for a bit of walking and some navigation quirks. Otherwise, it’s a reliable, well-run airport that doesn’t leave you drained before or after your flight.

One of the best airports I’ve ever been to. There is so much space for everything. It is a lot of walking but honestly it’s nice not having tons of people cramped into one space. they have so many restaurants and vendors and things to do while you wait for your plane too. Security was a breeze and they have a separate of for each letter. Like your gate b you have your own security. It was very peaceful and nice. There is also a beautiful view of the planes taking off while you sit.

I’ve been through a handful of airports, and I must say I fell in love with Sky Harbor – def has become
one of my favorites second only to the one in Milan. From the moment I arrived, everything felt smooth and effortless.

Transitions between terminals and gates were seamless, and TSA was a breeze.

efficient, straight to the point, and surprisingly stress-free. All we had to do is put our stuff in the bucket and go on.

The airport itself is beautiful—bright, spacious, and thoughtfully designed. It’s clean, well-lit, and has a calming atmosphere that genuinely makes you feel like you’re not just rushing through a travel hub. Every staff member I encountered was friendly, helpful, and professional, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Even at the spirit counter

Honestly, it was such a pleasant surprise. I never thought I’d be raving about an airport, but Sky Harbor really left an impression. And I love how it right up in the middle of Phoenix. ‍ so if you’re in the area, you get to see the planes fly over you and it’s really cool.

Can’t think of any other airport I’ve been to with beautiful views of the mountains! The airport is well laid out and is very well staffed. Plenty of food/drink options and the TSA line moved extremely quickly. One of my favorite airports!

Well organized and managed Airport. Seamless exchange between different terminal buildings & car rental station which is well removed from all terminals. Decent amount of commercial outlets but variety could be improved in terminal 3.

The Great Darkness

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) has evolved from a small airfield nicknamed “The Farm” into one of the busiest and most modern airports in the United States. Its history is a story of continuous expansion and modernization to keep pace with the explosive growth of the Phoenix metropolitan area.
History of the airport
Early days (1928–1940s)
1928: J. Parker Van Zandt purchased 278 acres of farmland to establish Sky Harbor for his airline, Scenic Airways.
1929: A formal dedication was held, but the Great Depression caused Scenic Airways to go bankrupt, and the airport was sold.
1935: To ensure commercial air service, the City of Phoenix purchased the airport from the Acme Investment Company for $100,000.
1940s: During World War II, the U.S. Army used Sky Harbor as a refueling stop and training facility, contributing to the city’s eventual postwar population boom.
Post-war modernization (1950s–1980s)
1952: The first modern terminal, Terminal 1, opened. Notable for its air traffic control tower made from welded fuel tanks, it was eventually demolished in 1990.
1962: Terminal 2 opened to accommodate increasing traffic, a facility considered state-of-the-art at the time. It featured a large mural by artist Paul Coze.
1979: Terminal 3 opened as passenger traffic continued to soar.
Deregulation: The Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 spurred growth, with new carriers like America West Airlines and Southwest Airlines establishing hubs at PHX.
Growth into a major hub (1990s–present)
1990: Terminal 4, the largest terminal, was built to support the massive growth of America West Airlines. It was later named after Senator Barry M. Goldwater.
Demolitions and expansion: Terminal 1 was torn down in 1990, and Terminal 2 was closed and demolished in 2020 to make way for future expansion.
2020: A major, $590 million modernization project for Terminal 3 was completed.
2021: Terminal 3 was renamed in honor of Senator John McCain.
2024: The airport served a record-breaking 50 million passengers in a single year.
The airport today
Phoenix Sky Harbor is a bustling, two-terminal airport (Terminal 3 and Terminal 4) that has embraced modernization to handle its growing passenger volume.
Key features:
Major hub: It is a major hub for American Airlines and a focus city for Southwest Airlines.
PHX Sky Train: An automated people mover connects passengers between terminals, the Economy Parking areas, and the Valley Metro Rail system, streamlining transportation.
Enhanced amenities: Modernized facilities offer a variety of amenities, including local restaurants, high-tech charging stations, and a robust Wi-Fi network.
Public art: The Phoenix Airport Museum curates an extensive collection of art, with exhibits scattered throughout the terminals. The relocated Paul Coze mural from the former Terminal 2 is now on display at the Rental Car Center.
Strong economic impact: The airport is a massive economic driver for Arizona, generating billions of dollars in economic activity and supporting thousands of jobs.
Future expansion:
With continued passenger growth, PHX has significant expansion plans to meet future demand.
Terminal 3 expansion: A $326 million project is currently underway to add six new gates to Terminal 3.
New West Terminal: A new terminal is planned to be built on the west side of the airport, where Terminals 1 and 2 once stood. It is projected to be net-zero for greenhouse gas emissions and will feature a new customs facility to expand international travel. Construction is not expected to start until around 2030

Don’t be deceived by this company rating from their website. You can only rate them by opening an account from membership, and you need to place your credit card info. They have less than 10 member

Stay away from this company. I’m not a person to complain, but my situation was getting worse with each minute, and day that passed by.

My driver, Joshua Seese, was first a few minutes late from the original pickup time. Fine, things happen, but let’s keep the lines of communication open. So we have an understanding.

When I arrived at my pickup location in Phoenix AR. at (10:55 am) and saw other drivers taking care of the customer. I waited and saw no extra vehicle available. I then called the drivers cell. (11:03) No answer, I then texted for information about ETA. (11:05) I didn’t get a reply back. He called back 8 minutes after my call (11:11) to mention he would be there shortly. Again, he arrived after my schedule 11:15 pickup. After all the other drivers left, I was the only customer waiting for my pickup. Phoenix weather was 112°

He arrived in his vehicle, Nav3 Black Lincoln SUV. My first impression was that vehicles could honestly use a car wash. I made that statement because I saw the other vehicle before my vehicle arrived, nice and clean looking. Every other driver had on a nice suit or casual wear. Mr. Seese clothing attire to me was, “What the heck?” Basketball shorts, a black tee-shirt, flip flops with black old socks and dark sun glasses. I thought I was on a candid camera show or something. Nope, this is my driver. If you don’t believe me, ask the lady who became my shared drive. Like I wrote before, my trip got worse by the minute.

After seeing Mr, Seese and I was inside the vehicle, he mentioned if I was emailed because he had another pickup that was given to him about half an hour ago. What? At no time was I advised of a shared drive from your company via email or call. I was up since 4 am here it is 2 pm in NY time, and I had a 5 hour flight, I wanted to rest alone on my 2 hour drive to Sedona. There goes that idea.

Mr. Seese was also late for his other pickup as well. The other guest kept calling him for ETA also. Guess what? He picked up her call while driving. That another no no because he should have a Bluetooth device. Also, he took her call but not mine when I reached out to him. On another note, his car would shake at high speeds. That’s an indication that the car needs to be serviced, may need new tires, or the car may need a wheel alignment. This is endangering your customers if you’re not inspecting your driver vehicle on a regular basis. My mistake was not recording or taking photos with my phone, but that won’t ever happen again. This experience has made me more alert to any future situation to be ready to record with my phone.

I have personally reached out to this company via email and phone call. In my email, I have attached a screenshot of my call log and text message to Mr. Seese to show my time calling and no reply back to my text. My question was, does your company feel that my situation was fair to me? I look forward to a reply back with instructions on how this can be addressed.

I received a response back that it has been forwarded to the management team attention. After 2 more emails and no reply back. I decided to call them. In my phone call, I asked the girl who picked up the phone. How long does it take the management team to reply back to an email? She was rude and said she doesn’t work for them, so she doesn’t know. But she will make them aware of my phone call.

This company has not replied back yet to my 3 emails and phone calls. This is another first-time experience on the worst customer service. To ignore a complaint or concerns. To have no regard for a bad rating or bad review?

Catch me once, shame on you. Catch me twice, shame on me. Never again will I use this company. People, please read other situations and reviews.

The only good experience about my drive to Sedona from Phoenix was that the conversation at time was good and the scenic landscape views.

Please don’t spend your money here. I’m not the type to complain or write reviews, but here is a summary of the deeply disappointing and disrespectful experience I had with this business:

I was scheduled for a 2:30 am pickup due to limited flight availability.
Instead of arriving within the 10–15 minute window outlined in their policy, the driver called and texted me several times a full 45 minutes early. Then he knocked on my bedroom window 20 minutes before the scheduled pickup time. As a woman traveling alone in the early hours, this felt intrusive and unsettling.

I reached out to the company to explain the situation and requested either a partial refund or the return of the driver gratuity (as their own policy allows). They replied once, saying they couldn’t offer a partial refund due to being a small business, but that they would escalate my email. I followed up to ask about the guaranteed gratuity return and escalation and received zero response (it has been over 2 weeks now).

The lack of accountability and professionalism is why I would not recommend this service—especially to solo travelers who expect reliable, respectful, and safe transportation.

See images for evidence of being contacted 45 minutes early by the driver, in addition to their customer service’s shallow response.

Raymond was a pleasure to take a ride with for an hour and a half. He is interesting and friendly when you want to talk and fine of you don’t. Thanks for the water bottles that you had frozen just enough to make them refreshing after a long plane ride!

Terrible experience. We booked a week ahead of our flight. They got the date and flight wrong off the bar, which took a few days to straighten out. We reserved a car for three adults with three full size bags. The day of, they sent us a small car (the driver said it was the smallest they had) that only fit two bags. And the driver was wearing an arm sling for surgery. We had nothing by sympathy for her but in reality, she shouldn’t have been driving in the first place. We had to cancel the ride and drive ourselves to the airport last minute.

The company refused to refund us because we didn’t cancel 48 hours ahead of time. Their mistake cost us our money. Do not recommend.

Unfortunately my experience has been zero help. My 92 yr old bed ridden mother lives with me and can’t get any services. I’m in my 50’s and work full time. I’m also her full time caregiver (diaper changes, all food and care bc she can’t get out of bed) bc her care at a facility became so expensive, with her not being able to walk, her retirement fund was depleted. I’m told in my area of Phoenix, near Sky Harbor, there’s no meals on wheels or lunch drop off program she qualifies for bc she lives with me. The only program with meals in our area is the SAIL program which is for independent living seniors. She can’t live on her own she can’t WALK OR GET OUT OF BED. I’ve been taking care of her for two years without help and trying to manage my job and other responsibilities. The lunch meal would have helped tremendously. The fact that state and federal money goes into running this program is mind boggling with the lack of service provided and call response times days out.

In one aspect they helped, really appreciated it. 2nd aspect being a Senior in my 70’s and disabled, it just seemed unnecessary unexplainable excuses, one thing after another, no communication. Made me feel I had to jump through hoops for trying to get help. Never heard of having to take photos of stuff in your house, to get help moving. I pray for God’s Grace & Mercy to get on my feet, get back to being independent. I would not want anyone to feel like I felt period. I shall pay it forward.

The agency itself is an important part of our community and provides much needed services to seniors. However, the long time director is incredibly unpleasant, rude and disrespectful, especially to staff. As a non-profit, her salary and spending are exorbitant. And everything has to be purple because it’s her favorite color. Even the pen she uses to sign documents. It’s comical.

I still filled out an application for my husband with ALS then saw all the negative reviews. Mailed in our application and it took them over 2 months to send back and it was “incomplete” Thank goodness the ALS chapter provides transportation to and from doctor clinics. Would not use this service at all!

This service was much better before I took hiatus in Illinois for 2022 but after returning from Illinois the service in 2023 and since has been stressful..

Pick up times are not available even when calling a week or 2 in advance.

The vehicles are mostly late I’d say about 80% of the time.

Driver’s will pull up on a hot or cold day and fill out their clipboard before even thinking about getting a client onboard.

Driver’s don’t use the GPS on the van instead they put my home address in to their phone. Sounds like a privacy issue to me.

Driver’s make clients wait on the van while they go to the bathroom on client time instead of their break or lunch time.

How did this service get so bad after being what I thought was so good…

I am forced to use this service for my mother and I have never had to be subjected to such disrespect by the reservation team. I called one day and was told that the reservation lady is training and I was fine with that but 25 minutes later I was still waiting to get a pick up time, some guy that referred to himself as a trainer had the edacity to get upset because I asked if we can get this done took over the phone call and practically called me out my name. I almost went down there any how it wasn’t my first bad experience with them and I am sure it wont be a last . These people need a customer service training conducted by QT. If they ever talk to my mother and put her under the stress they have thrown at me , I promise I will find a way too sue them. Just for everyone’s information you may file a formal complaint against any city of agency at the Mayor’s office they supervise all City of Phoenix agencies.

I am currently waiting for my Phoenix Dial A Ride in the cold in a dark, vacant parking lot. My ride is running late to pick me up because the driver has to eat lunch. The scheduler, Miriam refused to send another vehicle and would not let me speak to a supervisor. Of course, the supervisor is not there. Phoenix Dial A Ride is putting my safety and health at risk. I can’t give them a negative rating but I would like to.

They just added another 25 minutes to my pickup. This poor service is not what we are paying for. Their contract is not written with the purpose of leaving passengers stranded and putting our health at risk.

This has improved my quality of life. The drivers are safe and compassionate. Most of the complaints come from people that expect “taxi” service. This is a ride share and as long as you give yourself time to get where you are going it is stress free. I had bad experiences with total ride but the actual DAR bus rides are awesome!

I’ve had dial a ride for over 10years and yeah there is a mess up every once in awhile but nothing like this. I just moved two weeks ago and between deposits and rent that leaves me with necessities. Dial a ride has no showed me 4 times in 1 week. Even though the driver is supposed to come to the door they never do and when i try to explain the situation they ignore it. Now I get to explain to my boss tommorrow that I have no way to get to work for the next week a half. People like me rely on to get me to and from work. And be able to afford it. This is not fair how am I supposed to pay my bills when you keep messing up!

I paid my mothers monthly dial a ride pass with a credit card in December 2022 and mailed them the card information on the authorization form they provided. Today Raphael, their CSR supervisor told me they did not receive the updated authorization form and that she was past due. Would need to pay for the month passed, which I did with him over the phone. I was then told that she would have no monthly pass for the month of July and would need to pay retail rate for her rides for the entire month of July. sh would then be reinstated on the monthly pass for August. I told the CSR, Raphael that that was punitive and sounded like a punishment. He told me it was a penalty for not renewing on time which I attempted to do but they did not receive it. My mother is on a fixed income and depends on dial a ride to get to her lab test and doctors appointments throughout the month. How dare you, City of Phoenix take an admittedly punitive action against the customers who pay your salaries. My mother is 84 years old and ths system should be set up to be convenient for the people you serve, not for the city of Phoenix. SHAME ON YOU! I will be talking to my councilman. all others who have encountered this punitive behavior should also make your displeasure known.

Terrible service from the get go. Where to start? They hung up on me at first rudely for no reason. I had to call several times to actually reach someone. Then when I finally do.. the guy on the line takes down my address wrong. I wasn’t aware until my driver picks me up and he starts heading the wrong way! We end up arguing about where he is taking me, which is absurd. I feel like if the customer tells you; “hey you are heading the wrong way” you should turn immediately and follow directions. The guy who took down my address wrong can’t even speak English right. Nothing against him, but if you are going to be a phone operator you need to understand the language to write it down correctly! He acts like I don’t know where I asked to go! He had to confirm over a phone call, and still charged me for him going the wrong way. Ridiculous. A 6 mile ride was 25. They are straight up crooks and I will never recommend their service to anyone or call them again. Also if the customer service is not enough to discourage you from calling these clowns..the vehicle I was picked up in was also dirty and looked like it just came out of a murder scene. I only used them because I was getting my new debit card in the mail.. so I couldn’t use lift or Uber. If cash is your only option, I suggest walking instead, or taking the bus then using this service. I wouldn’t wish this service on my worst enemy.

I rely on prompt cab service for my motorcycle rental customers. I’m writing this review because I have finally had it with this company. Their wait times are always at least twice what they originally say they will be. On one occasion I called for a van to take 5 adult customers with luggage to the airport. They sent a Prius, then tried to argue that I never asked for a van. The van showed up three hours after the original call while we were locking up for the night. The driver actually tried to get an attitude with US for not calling to cancel the cab. Today, I called for a normal pickup. After 45 minutes I called to get an ETA and was told that it hadn’t yet been assigned to a driver. Nice. The woman on the phone was slightly hostile when I asked how much longer my customers could be expected to wait. She said it would be another 10-15 minutes. Whatever. 20 minutes later I called back and was told that the order STILL hadn’t been assigned to a driver. I tried to express my customer’s urgency and only received more hostility from the woman on the phone, (not sure if it was the same person or not.) After more than an hour of dealing with these people, I called another company and they have already collected my customers, less than 10 minutes after my call.

Long story short, I guess Discount Cab has more business than they can handle. Good for them. I’m changing the cab company I use several times a week to one that might actually at least ACT like they value/ need our business.

Pro Tip for Discount Cab: Hire people that can speak intelligibly on the phone, and treat them well so that your potential customers can’t hear through the phone lines how much they hate working for you.

My car was in the shop and I called for a cab and they never showed. When I called to ask, they informed me no reservation had been made when I made it the day before. I informed the dispatcher I was about to miss an important appointment meeting and needed someone there ASAP. The dispatcher became rude and informed me that I would have to wait an hour they were busy and I should have made a reservation. I thought we went over this and I made one the day before. I asked her name and to speak to her supervisor, she hung up on me. I called corporate and they referred me to “Alex”. After leaving two messages, “Alex” never bothered to return my calls. They used to be a good and prompt company, no more. Discount Cab you lost a good customer. KMA.

I am completely done with Discount cab for all the reasons in the reviews below. Its interesting that you cant leave a review on Discount Cabs website.. Their promise says nothing about being prompt or reliable or anything about service to customers. I’ve spent too much time waiting for No Shows No Calls and being on hold 20-30 minutes.

I called the night before to order a cab ride for the morning of the next day. After waiting 10 min past my pick up time there wasn’t a cab yet. I called and they didn’t have a cab in my area (Mesa). Another 10 min went by and I called another cab company and then cancelled with “Discount Cab”. I needed to be at a location by a specific time, thus ordering the cab ahead of time. Now, I could be late to my appointment. Unappreciated! Will not call them again.

First I never have to use a cab so the fact that I had to use when to begin with was very frustrating. Then to have to deal with the service of this company was absolutely terrible. I’ve never been so frustrated about waiting because I’m a patient person and my vehicle. was just getting a oil change so I figured I use discount to get home real quick. I ended up just sitting at the down car shop the whole time. By time they got to me my oil change was over I got into my Challenger RT. And told the driver from discount to suck one as I drove off but gave him a quarter for his time. Use another company don’t waste your time with discount.
