✈️ Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport (PHX) Review I recently flew into Phoenix Sky Harbor and while it’s one of the larger airports in the U.S., my experience felt surprisingly smooth — closer to a smaller airport in terms of efficiency. Not the Busiest Even though PHX handles a ton of flights daily, it doesn’t have that chaotic, shoulder-to-shoulder feel you sometimes get at other major airports. Security lines moved quickly, and I didn’t feel overwhelmed by crowds. Navigation – A Bit Tricky This is where PHX shows its size. The signage could be better, and it takes a bit of focus to figure out which direction to head, especially in Terminal 3. If you’re new here, you might find yourself second-guessing a turn or two. Clean & Well Kept One of the first things I noticed: the airport is clean. From the concourses to the restrooms, everything felt well maintained and tidy — which isn’t always the case at big hubs. Terminal 3 Arrival – Long Walk I landed at Terminal 3, and while modern, it does have a long walk to the baggage claim. It’s not terrible, but after a long flight, dragging carry-ons that extra distance feels longer than expected. ✅ Overall PHX combines the efficiency of a smaller airport with the amenities of a bigger hub. Just be ready for a bit of walking and some navigation quirks. Otherwise, it’s a reliable, well-run airport that doesn’t leave you drained before or after your flight.

One of the best airports I’ve ever been to. There is so much space for everything. It is a lot of walking but honestly it’s nice not having tons of people cramped into one space. they have so many restaurants and vendors and things to do while you wait for your plane too. Security was a breeze and they have a separate of for each letter. Like your gate b you have your own security. It was very peaceful and nice. There is also a beautiful view of the planes taking off while you sit.

I’ve been through a handful of airports, and I must say I fell in love with Sky Harbor - def has become one of my favorites second only to the one in Milan. From the moment I arrived, everything felt smooth and effortless. Transitions between terminals and gates were seamless, and TSA was a breeze. efficient, straight to the point, and surprisingly stress-free. All we had to do is put our stuff in the bucket and go on. The airport itself is beautiful—bright, spacious, and thoughtfully designed. It’s clean, well-lit, and has a calming atmosphere that genuinely makes you feel like you’re not just rushing through a travel hub. Every staff member I encountered was friendly, helpful, and professional, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Even at the spirit counter Honestly, it was such a pleasant surprise. I never thought I’d be raving about an airport, but Sky Harbor really left an impression. And I love how it right up in the middle of Phoenix. ‍ so if you’re in the area, you get to see the planes fly over you and it’s really cool.

Can’t think of any other airport I’ve been to with beautiful views of the mountains! The airport is well laid out and is very well staffed. Plenty of food/drink options and the TSA line moved extremely quickly. One of my favorite airports!

Well organized and managed Airport. Seamless exchange between different terminal buildings & car rental station which is well removed from all terminals. Decent amount of commercial outlets but variety could be improved in terminal 3.

Its history is a story of continuous expansion and modernization to keep pace with the explosive growth of the Phoenix metropolitan area. History of the airport Early days (1928–1940s) 1928: J. Parker Van Zandt purchased 278 acres of farmland to establish Sky Harbor for his airline, Scenic Airways. 1929: A formal dedication was held, but the Great Depression caused Scenic Airways to go bankrupt, and the airport was sold. 1935: To ensure commercial air service, the City of Phoenix purchased the airport from the Acme Investment Company for $100,000. 1940s: During World War II, the U.S. Army used Sky Harbor as a refueling stop and training facility, contributing to the city's eventual postwar population boom. Post-war modernization (1950s–1980s) 1952: The first modern terminal, Terminal 1, opened. Notable for its air traffic control tower made from welded fuel tanks, it was eventually demolished in 1990. 1962: Terminal 2 opened to accommodate increasing traffic, a facility considered state-of-the-art at the time. It featured a large mural by artist Paul Coze. 1979: Terminal 3 opened as passenger traffic continued to soar. Deregulation: The Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 spurred growth, with new carriers like America West Airlines and Southwest Airlines establishing hubs at PHX. Growth into a major hub (1990s–present) 1990: Terminal 4, the largest terminal, was built to support the massive growth of America West Airlines. It was later named after Senator Barry M. Goldwater. Demolitions and expansion: Terminal 1 was torn down in 1990, and Terminal 2 was closed and demolished in 2020 to make way for future expansion. 2020: A major, $590 million modernization project for Terminal 3 was completed. 2021: Terminal 3 was renamed in honor of Senator John McCain. 2024: The airport served a record-breaking 50 million passengers in a single year. The airport today Phoenix Sky Harbor is a bustling, two-terminal airport (Terminal 3 and Terminal 4) that has embraced modernization to handle its growing passenger volume. Key features: Major hub: It is a major hub for American Airlines and a focus city for Southwest Airlines. PHX Sky Train: An automated people mover connects passengers between terminals, the Economy Parking areas, and the Valley Metro Rail system, streamlining transportation. Enhanced amenities: Modernized facilities offer a variety of amenities, including local restaurants, high-tech charging stations, and a robust Wi-Fi network. Public art: The Phoenix Airport Museum curates an extensive collection of art, with exhibits scattered throughout the terminals. The relocated Paul Coze mural from the former Terminal 2 is now on display at the Rental Car Center. Strong economic impact: The airport is a massive economic driver for Arizona, generating billions of dollars in economic activity and supporting thousands of jobs. Future expansion: With continued passenger growth, PHX has significant expansion plans to meet future demand. Terminal 3 expansion: A $326 million project is currently underway to add six new gates to Terminal 3. New West Terminal: A new terminal is planned to be built on the west side of the airport, where Terminals 1 and 2 once stood. It is projected to be net-zero for greenhouse gas emissions and will feature a new customs facility to expand international travel. Good airport facility, clean airport and friendly staff members. Multiple dining options are available in the terminal along with short security checkpoint lines. All security checkpoint can be used to access all gates.
